Parcels in the Netherlands

Various carriers are active in the Netherlands. Each carrier has its own specialty:

  • letter post: these are letters (documents) and letterbox parcels that are delivered through the letterbox. PostNL is specialized in this. Letterbox packages are delivered by the postman on a bicycle at the same time as the letter post instead of a parcel deliverer in a car.
  • Packages: these are packages that do not fit through the letterbox and for which the driver rings the recipient's doorbell. These networks are intended for very many packages to keep costs down. Think of carriers such as DPD, PostNL, DHL eCommerce and GLS in the Netherlands.
  • Express: these are fast deliveries over a network in which fewer shipments are processed. Shipments get a lot of attention here. Several carriers such as DHL Express, UPS and TNT/FedEx offer this next business day delivery service.
  • same day: these are shipments that are delivered on the same day by carriers such as DHL Today and Trunkrs.
  • Courier: this is the premium method of shipping similar to a taxi. The driver collects the shipment and delivers it directly to the recipient.
  • Groupage: this is the merging of several small shipments into one large shipment. Pallets are often transported by specialized companies such as Rhenus. The larger carriers such as DHL eCommerce and FedEx/TNT can also do this.
letter post

If you want to use letter mail with your webshop, a shipping label with the address on it is often enough. Our software also ensures that your shipment is deregistered in your webshop or at a marketplace such as Bol.com

  • Carriers: PostNL, Skynet, RM, Asendia and many local delivery services via, for example, a sheltered workshop
  • Dimensions: maximum 38 x 26,5 x 3,2 cm
  • Weight: maximum 2 kg
  • Insurance: not possible, because there is no knock on delivery and there is therefore no proof that the shipment has actually been delivered. Is a shipment damaged or lost? Then there is no compensation by the carrier.
  • Track & trace: letter post cannot be tracked, because there is no track & trace on letter post. This is often possible on letterbox shipments.
  • Extra options: because the shipment is delivered in the letterbox, there are no additional options, such as a signature for receipt.
  • Surcharges: these are quite unusual.
  • Shipping label: from the Wuunder software rolls a shipping label that you can also format as desired, for example by adding your logo.
  • Details: read here more about the specific characteristics of each carrier.
Packages

There are various carriers that have specialized in the transport of packages.

  • Carriers: PostNL, DHL eCommerce, DPD and GLS.
  • Dimensions: 80 x 50 x 35 cm is a fairly common size. Above that, many carriers already apply surcharges.
  • Weight: maximum 31,5 kg. With a higher weight, it counts as a pallet for many carriers.
  • Insurance: most carriers charge a kilo price when a shipment is lost. Carriers use CMR conditions for transport within the Netherlands and AVC conditions for transport outside the Netherlands. The carrier is thus liable for loss and damage. However, standard liability is limited. Within CMR conditions this is approximately 10 euros and within AVC conditions approximately 3,40 euros per kilogram. It is also possible to take out additional insurance.
  • Track & trace: almost all carriers offer a track & trace option with which you can follow the different steps in the shipping process.
  • Extra options: There are often various options available, such as a signature for receipt, morning delivery, evening delivery, etc.
  • Surcharges: if shipments are too large or too heavy, a fine will follow. A surcharge is also applied if shipments have to be delivered in remote areas such as the Wadden Islands. If the recipient refuses or if the shipment is not picked up at a parcel shop, the shipment will be returned and most carriers charge the same rates as the outward journey plus a fine.
  • Shipping label: most carriers have a C6 shipping label.
  • Details: Be careful when sending rolls and seal bags. Some carriers charge surcharges for this. read here more about the specific characteristics of each carrier.
Express

There are various carriers that have specialized in the transport of Express shipments.

  • Carriers: TNT/FedEx, UPS and DHL Express
  • Dimensions: because shipments are often flown, every centimeter counts and it is important to use packaging that contains little air. These carriers can transport almost all envelopes, parcels and pallets.
  • Weight: maximum 30 kg.
  • Track & trace: express carriers have many scan moments so that you can follow the shipment very well.
  • Details: Make sure your shipment is always stackable. Express carriers apply hefty non-stackable surcharges. They often apply both a diesel surcharge and a kerosene surcharge when the shipment is flying. The latter is always higher than the diesel surcharge. read here more about the specific characteristics of each carrier.
